From Shop Chat to Cloudbreak Barrel: How the Right Board Made It Happen From Shop Chat to Cloudbreak Barrel: How the Right Board Made It Happen
A few months back, a couple of girls wandered into our shop. One of them mentioned she was based in Fiji for a little while and was looking for a board that would suit the waves there.
Naturally, my ears pricked up. Having surfed Fiji plenty ourselves, we know the waves there inside out - and we know what works best when the sets get heavy. So we spent over an hour going through different boards, talking shapes, volumes, and what would give her the best chance to absolutely kill it in Fiji’s lineups.
At the end of it all, she and her friend thanked us and left without buying anything. To be honest, I was a little gutted. We put so much into helping surfers get on the right gear, but sometimes you never know if your advice sticks.
Fast-forward a few months. Out of the blue, an email arrives from Fiji. It’s Claudia!
She tells us how much she appreciated the time we spent with her, and that after thinking it through, she’s picked out a couple of boards based on our recommendations - plus a travel bag and all the accessories to go with them.
We packed everything up and got it shipped over to Fiji. A few days later, another email lands in the inbox - this time with a photo attached. She had just scored her first barrel at Cloudbreak on her new Tokoro 5+, the very board we suggested for her.
Weeks later, more photos rolled in. There she was, charging Cloudbreak, smiling ear to ear, riding boards that we knew would give her the best chance out there.
For us, this is what it’s all about. It’s not just about selling boards. It’s about sharing our experience, guiding people to gear that truly fits them and the waves they’ll surf — and then seeing them take that advice and turn it into moments they’ll never forget.
That’s why we do what we do.
